MATT Maestro en Casa (MMEC) improves immigrant integration and parent engagement efforts through education. The MMEC initiative helps resident immigrants in the United States comprehend the American system in order to enhance their standard of living.
By offering free, practical, and simple courses through audio recordings and workbooks, the MATT Foundation, Inc., in collaboration with community partners throughout the U.S., helps resident immigrant communities integrate smoothly into American society.
The MMEC initiative was created in response to the difficulties faced by many resident immigrants as they adjust to life in their new surroundings. Through basic, pre-recorded lessons, MMEC addresses the barriers many immigrants encounter as a new resident of the U.S.
MMEC’s 54-lesson curriculum allows adult students to navigate through common American situations and systems. Lessons are broadcast via radio, recorded onto CDs, or are accessible online, which allows continual access of the instructional material to the adult learners at convenient times.
MMEC is designed to address the essential aspects of the life of an immigrant family in the United States, and is divided into the following topics:
- Basic Living
- Health Care & Prevention
- Financial Planning
- Workplace Adaptation
- Education
- Citizenship & Community Involvement
The effectiveness of the program is represented in a survey of 500 participants, stating that the program:
- Helped improve their lives (65%)
- Helped them integrate into American Society (60%)
MMEC’s lessons are supplemented and enhanced with activity workbooks at no cost to the student and are also available online at www.mattmaestroencasa.org. This allows adult students living outside of the main markets to also benefit from this free program.
MMEC is already being implemented in San Antonio, Texas, Denver, Colorado and Los Angeles, California. We now seek to expand MMEC in the following ten markets Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago and Orlando, with a total of 118,000 sets of books being distributed in a two-year span from 2012 to 2014.
MATT Maestro en Casa is part of MATT (Mexicans & Americans Thinking Together), a bi-national, non-profit organization with focus on integration, education, economic development, and advocacy. MATT’s mission is to encourage Mexicans and Americans to come together to bridge the gaps of understanding and quality of life so that both nations may truly prosper together.
